Kansas Farmers Union proudly honors the legacy of Ruth Hirsh through its annual award in her name. The prestigious Ruth Hirsh Award is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to agriculture and/or the efforts of the Farmers Union.
Ruth and her husband Donald farmed near Kinsley beginning in the mid 1950s. Throughout their 42 years of marriage they were active in their community, fighting for the preservation of the family farm. Through Kansas Farmers Union, Ruth was the first woman to be elected a member of the State Board of Directors and was sent to Washington, D.C. various times to lobby for family farms. She represented the Farmers Union in meetings across the United States before becoming the State Youth and Education Director for KFU and traveling throughout the state.
